1. I want to do some wine tasting and see the vineyards. What wineries are nearby?
Paradise Ridge, Mantanzas Creek, Martinelli, & DeLoach Winery are a few of the larger wineries in Santa Rosa. There are approximately 150 wineries surrounding Santa Rosa as well. You can travel north on Hwy. 101 and visit the many wineries and vineyards in Healdsburg and Geyserville. You can also travel east on Hwy. 12 toward the town of Sonoma and take a winery tram tour at Benzinger Winery or visit the many others nearby. Lastly, travel west on River Road toward the town of Guerneville and visit the famous Korbel Champagne Cellars.
 
2. What is the weather like?
Santa Rosa has a mild climate. Average summer afternoon temperatures are in the low 80's with no humidity and evening temperatures may dip into the 50's. There are four distinct seasons, with rain occurring mainly in the months from October to March.
 
3. Did Luther Burbank live in Santa Rosa?
Yes, Luther Burbank lived in Santa Rosa for 53 years. He settled in Santa Rosa in 1855.
 
4. I want to see redwood trees. Where can I go?
There are no redwood groves in Santa Rosa, but you can visit Armstrong Woods State Park in the town of Guerneville. This beautiful redwood forest is less than a half hour west of Santa Rosa on River Road.
 
5. Where is Santa Rosa and how do I get there?
Santa Rosa is located 56 miles north of San Francisco and 23 miles east of the Pacific Ocean in the County of Sonoma. Visit the "Getting Here" page for driving directions.
 
6. Did Charles M. Schulz, the creator of Snoopy & the Peanuts Gang, live in Santa Rosa?
Yes, Charles M. Schulz lived in Sonoma County for over 40 years. He was born in Minnesota in November 26, 1922 and came to Sonoma County in 1958. He first lived in Sebastopol and moved to Santa Rosa in the mid 1960's. Charles M. Schulz died on February 12, 2000 and is buried at the family plot in Sebastopol.
 
7. Does the train still run through town?
No, the last freight train to run through Santa Rosa was in December of 1998 and passenger service ended in 1958.

Clear Lake: Fascinating Pomo History at Anderson Marsh State Historic Park

Walk through archeological sites from prehistoric times at this lovely and surprising preserve.

It’s not often that you can imagine life as it was some 10,000 years ago, but you get to play time traveler at Anderson Marsh State Historic Park  on the shores of Clear Lake. The surprisingly undiscovered park contains picturesque oak woodlands, grass-covered hills, and a wildlife-rich tule marsh.

The preserve’s varied landscape once served as home to one of the largest groups of people in prehistoric California, the Southeastern Pomo. Today, Pomo descendants still live in the region. At the park, walk an easy mile on a flat trail to discover a reconstructed Pomo village and learn how the park’s archeological sites have revealed clues about this fascinating culture. One of the most populous Native American groups in California, the Pomo occupied the Anderson Marsh area as far back as 10,000 years ago. The village here represents one that Pomo elders would have built every year. Sitting in the quiet picnic area here, sitting amidst huts built of tule reeds, it’s easy to imagine the vibrant village life that once enlivened the scene—children playing, men heading off to fish, women cooking and weaving (Pomos were known as exceptional basket-makers).

Anderson Marsh Historic Park, named after a Scottish immigrant who had a cattle ranch here in 1885, also protects several habitats including freshwater marsh, oak woodland, grasslands, and riparian woodland. Explore it all on meandering trails; bring binoculars for excellent birdwatching, particularly in spring. In September, the park hosts an annual bluegrass festival.
