Marvelous Elephant Seals at Piedras Blancas

The Piedras Blancas Rookery  offers the amazing site of thousands of elephant seals. On State 1 about seven miles north of San Simeon (perfect for a stop after Hearst Castle), is a show like no other. The beach is home to some 15,000 elephant seals, calling ashore to mate, giving birth, or indulging in the sort of noisy excess only a creature 16 feet long and 5,000-plus pounds can generate. Join the chaos, or watch a sunbathing seal - sometimes the only sign of life is a lazy flipper flopping or twitchy ear. Admission is free, and on-site docents will answer your questions. The best time to visit is December through about March.
